Crank (2006)

Despite a brilliantly bizarre premise—Speed with walking, hitman Jason Statham has to keep his heart-rate above a certain rate or die—Crank is basically the work of two directors who have seen far too many trashy 80s films of the ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ variety that they’ve decided to purposely make a ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ film. Unfortunately, the magic beneath any number of Troll 2’s, The Room’s and Plan 9 from Outer Space’s is their complete lack of self-awareness. Crank is like that asshole who knows he’s an asshole and makes no apologies for it: entertaining for a few minutes, before being beset by the realisation that this is completely vapid. Most importantly, it simply isn’t a very good action film.
