What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

3.5/4

Although the central comic premise behind What We Do in the Shadows—a mock-reality TV crew follow around a group of vampires to see how they live—could arguably have worked better as a TV series, this is still one of the funniest comedies of recent years. Although the send-ups of horror genres and the mock-reality aesthetic are well-trodden paths these days, the film’s sharp sense of those tropes and the excellently-written gags (written by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi) and mean that it never loses vitality (even if its vampiric subjects have little life in them), aided by a brisk running time that means it doesn’t risk outstaying its welcome.
