Achieving a solid degree of film of infamy upon release for a high amount of unsimulated sex between performers (and they didn’t even use porn body doubles a la Lars von Trier!), Shortbus is actually more notable for just how relaxed and warm it is. It is quite roughshod – visual motifs are attempted but not really made much of, and the characterisation is sometimes a little drab – but the actors all look perfectly relaxed and in their element. Most films skirt over sex sheepishly, Shortbus admirably handles it in a frank, honest, and emphatic way. John Cameron Mitchell’s film isn’t entirely successful, but its heart more than makes up for its deficiencies.
