Moonrise Kingdom is a Wes Anderson film. That means it has all the flaws that Wes Anderson films so often do, and some of the positives too. Moonrise Kingdom has an absolutely astounding A-list cast, who all perform well but are admittedly upstaged by the two fantastic kids at the centre of the film. It is every bit as well-designed and pretty a film as you’d expect Anderson’s films to be. It is fun, fast-paced and quite funny. And yet…I still can’t find myself loving Moonrise Kingdom. It is perhaps a little warmer towards its characters than other Anderson films, yet I can’t quite get past its archness, its wryness and emotional detachment, all Anderson traits I often find suffocating in his work.
