The Babadook (2014)

2.5/4

I’m somewhat unconvinced by The Babadook as a horror film. It loses its creepiness as more is revealed of the monster, and it rarely genuinely scares. Perhaps this is because I am not a parent, and The Babadook‘s scares are predicated very much on the mother-son relationship that lies at the heart of the film. But this relationship, acted out by Essie Davis and Daniel Henshall in two superb performances, produces a rather interesting drama too, one not too far removed from the fantastic We Need to Talk About Kevin directed by Lynne Ramsey. A solid horror that I feel will warrant a rewatch in the future.
