Umberto D. is the culmination and peak of not just Vittorio De Sica’s filmmaking, but also Italian Neorealism as a whole. De Sica would never reach these heights again, and all the other neorealists effectively had to move onto other game. In its utter simplicity and empathy for its titular character, Umberto D. quietly, slowly, builds into a film into which utterly devastates the human soul. The ending is overloaded with equal parts sadness and hope, with loneliness and optimism, desolation and love. The fact that De Sica so masterfully draws out all these emotions from the viewer with such simple filmmaking tools and amateur actors surely paints him as one of the greatest dramatists of the cinema.
