Brokeback Mountain (2005)

As beautifully made as it is, my main issue with Brokeback Mountain is that it’s just a bit too polite, almost as it doesn’t really want to get deep down into the muck with its characters. Perhaps that is the point – it’s a film about two men who guard their secrets throughout their whole lives, repressing them deep down. On that level the film works, with many layers of ambiguity in their respective relationships. It’s got the performances to rise to the challenge of such complexity too, though I have to admit that as brilliant as Heath Ledger is, Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t quite match up to him, and the chemistry between the two is somewhat stunted.
