Fight Club (1999)

David Fincher is a great director and an awful thinker. I have never once been bored watching a David Fincher film. He always brings great performances out of his cast. His films drip with style and neo-noir lighting. They are excellent edited and excellently paced, ensuring I never once feel like the film is dragging or tiring me out. Yet, give him complex, potentially troublesome subtext to deal with and the man is a fish flopping on the shore. Fight Club wants to be a politically-charged film, but it is so confused and dumb that it generates no coherent statement or discussion whatsoever – give me Se7en, Panic Room or Zodiac over this any day of the week.
