Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

Birdman has great performances from its entire cast (and a fantastic cast it is too). Birdman has excellent cinematography from the ever-excellent Emanuel Lubezki. Birdman is raucously funny at times and tense and claustrophobic at others. As a technical achievement it is brilliant. Is it a classic and one of the best films of the year? Not particularly. It’s a lot of fun and never boring, easily Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s best film to date, though that isn’t saying much; but I felt the ending was a bit of a cop-out and the film is ultimately slightly shallow. It’s a very good film that I’m not entirely convinced by.
