Machete (2010)

2.5/4

Sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing. Despite the constant bollocking he gets from most cinephiles, I’m actually a fan of Robert Rodriguez’s balls-to-the-wall comedy splatter style. And Machete is about all-out as it’s possible to get with a touch of satire to boot. Yet, I feel Rodriguez’s imagination lets him down here in the end. There are some epic moments of badassery from Danny Trejo (INTENSTINE SWING!), but ultimately Machete cools down into just a whole bunch of shootouts and explosions, none with any real kick to them. It’s a shame, because there are great moments in Machete and I really wanted to love it, but it failed to deliver those moments frequently enough to succeed as a whole.
