Dog Soldiers is absolutely not original. We know from the first frame of the film almost exactly what is going to happen. There are a group of soldiers on a training exercise in Scotland. Once night falls they will be attacked and brutally murdered by something – the question is what, and how? As a relatively low-budget horror, Neil Marshall’s debut feature is perfectly good fun. It’s tense, it’s just about spooky enough to work, and the decapitations and gore are entertainingly done. Marshall’s second feature The Descent was much more accomplished, but this remains a solid, entertaining genre film.
