Eastern Promises (2007)

3.5/4

A rather good gangster film from the latter stages of Cronenberg’s career. Rather than the default ‘rise-and-fall’ narrative of most gangster flicks, Eastern Promises prefers to take a slightly different tone, instead preferring to engage with what happens when the ‘normal’ world and the underworld begin to overlap. I’m not entirely convinced by Vincent Cassel’s snivelling Russian gangster, but Viggo Mortensen’s ice-cool turn as his ‘driver’ is absolutely superb, and Naomi Watts is quite solid herself. Eastern Promises perhaps doesn’t raise its sights as high thematically as other Cronenberg film, but in return it does meet them with relative comfort and ease. This is one of Cronenberg’s most ‘accessible’ and enjoyable films.
